The seminar introduces ways of describing and analysing language-use by focusing on grammar, the linguistic generation of meaning, and variation within the English language. We deal with characteristics of human language by focusing on how it differs from animal language and how children acquire their native language; and consider how language changes over time and how social and cultural factors affect language-use.
